Most Minnesotans take at least one trip ‘up north’ each year
Black Minnesotans are less likely than other racial and ethnic groups to say they travel ‘up north’ every year.

A majority of Minnesotans (62%) say they take one or more trips to northern Minnesota each year, with 37% saying they take multiple trips.
By contrast, only 24% of Minnesotans say they do not take any trips. Another 14% say they already live in northern Minnesota, according to a Minnesota Community Survey of 3,399 adults conducted July 20 to Nov. 22, 2024.
· Black Minnesotans are less likely than other racial and ethnic groups to say they travel ‘up north’ every year. In fact, they are less likely than any major demographic group to say this.
· Minnesotans with higher incomes and higher levels of education are more likely than others to say they visit northern Minnesota at least once a year.

Visits ‘up north’ by race and ethnicity
Black Minnesotans are the only demographic group in Minnesota to be equally divided on whether they travel ‘up north’: 43% say they go to northern Minnesota at least once a year, and 43% say they do not.
· 70% of Asian Minnesotans say they make an annual trip ‘up north.’
· 64% of White Minnesotans go to northern Minnesota at least once a year
· 62% of Hispanic Minnesotans say they travel ‘up north’ at least annually.
Visits ‘up north’ by household income
Most Minnesotans who live in upper-income (74%) and upper-middle income (71%) households say they visit northern Minnesota at least once a year, as do those in lower-middle income households (67%).
Less than half (46%) of Minnesotans in lower-income households say they go ‘up north’ at least once a year.
Visits ‘up north’ by education
Most Minnesotans with a college degree (70%) and those who have attended some college (62%) say they visit northern Minnesota at least once a year. By contrast, 51% of those with a high school degree or less say they go ‘up north’ at least once a year.
