Nearly 3,400 Minnesotans responded to a Lumaris survey gauging perceptions of public safety across the state — where crime rates vary but have broadly decreased to the lowest level in more than three decades.

A new poll finds that most Minnesotans think that their communities are “always” or “mostly” safe, but one-third think their communities are becoming less safe. In addition, one-quarter say they avoid activities due to fear of crime.

For the first time in its nearly 20-year history, Minnesota Compass collected primary data for its Public Safety topic area. A partnership with Lumaris Research helped make this project a reality.

Loneliness appears to be especially common among those perceiving their communities as unsafe, as well as Indigenous and Generation Z Minnesotans. The APM Research Lab included questions on loneliness for the “Minds of Minnesotans” survey, conducted by Lumaris.

About 48 percent of Minnesotans feel left out some of the time or often, according to the “Minds of Minnesotans” survey conducted by APM Research Lab. Lumaris surveyed 3,399 participants for the project.
